CPI Security Proudly Protects Hummingbird House for Foster Children

Hummingbird House

CPI Security is proudly providing security solutions to a home that temporarily houses children going into foster care.

Least of These Carolinas (LOT) is a non-profit serving more than half of the 100 counties in North Carolina. Co-founder of LOT, Susanna Kavanaugh, says their missions is to support children in foster care in any way they can.

Recently, LOT launched a new resource to support foster children called the Hummingbird House. Social workers can book the Hummingbird House, so children who are in Department of Social Services (DSS) custody have a home  until they are assigned to a foster family.

“It’s a very sad fact that children are sleeping on the floor at DSS,” Kavanaugh said. “They may be sleeping on a cot, but they are sleeping in an office building. So, instead of going back to the DSS office where there’s not a bed, not a shower, not things they need to make them feel at home, this is just another option.”

Kavanaugh says they named it the Hummingbird House because much like a hummingbird’s frantic movements, life can feel very chaotic for children in these situations.

“As a child, everything has been taken from you in one fail swoop. And so, you’re just very chaotic,” Kavanaugh said. “We just want them to have somewhere to come, stop, and catch their breath.”

Securing the Hummingbird House is of upmost importance to Kavanaugh, especially because the children who are staying there are often removed from dangerous or inappropriate situations at home. Kavanaugh says they first tried a DIY home security solution but were unhappy with the level of security it provided.

“Our number one goal is to make them [the children and social workers] feel safe and secure,” Kavanaugh said. It was really important that we could have the best there is to offer, and we felt like CPI was that.”

Upon learning about LOT and the Hummingbird House, CEO and Founder of CPI Security Ken Gill donated the security system to the non-profit.

“We strongly believe in the work Least of These Carolinas is doing for children in our community,” Gill said. “There is no security more important than that of our children, so it’s our pleasure to equip the Hummingbird House with top-of-the-line solutions.”

Unlike the original system LOT used, CPI is professionally installed and monitored.

“I love that I didn’t have to install CPI. I loved that I met a professional here … and I didn’t have to worry about, ‘did that sensor connect?’ Because that CPI guy was not going to leave here until he knew that every single thing in this house worked correctly,” Kavanaugh said.

In addition to home automation and security solutions, CPI monitors the Hummingbird House 24/7 with its award-winning Central Station monitoring center. If an alarm is ever triggered, a CPI central station operator will respond in real-time to get the authorities to the home quickly.

“We sleep better knowing that CPI is watching over this house for us,” Kavanaugh said.
